'FRISCO

; By Earwig— Lake Placid (Imp.). The New Zealand Cup winner ..is riow a four-year-old, and has up to the present had a very remarkable career. He was imported m utero with his dam by Messrs L. D. and N. A. Nathan from America, and at their disposal sale he was bought with his mother by Mr Robert Newman, of Marton, for the small sum of 69 guineas. Even at this ridiculously small figure he seemed to be a very bad bargain, as both he and his dam contracted severe attacks of strangles, and on three different occasions farm hands were sent to bury the colt, as it was thought he would surely die. The opposite turned out to be the Case and the youngster was reared on cow's milk. He was foaled on the 30th November, 1903, and just twelve months later he was handed to F. Tilley to. prepare lor future engagements. He scored his first win for Mr F. Preston, who holds a lease of him for his racing career, m a two-year-old race at | Hastings. The distance was 5£ furlongs, and anyone who was there will remember what a sensational run he put m at the finish. It was here that many good judges prophesied a great future for him. As a three-year-old he was tried over a distance m the last Feilding Cup and here he gave promise of turning out a stayer. This season he won his 'first race at Marton, and then went on to Wanganui and won the Marangai Handicap, of 1 mile, defeating, amongst others. Armistice and Maniopoto. Then his trainer advised Mr Preston to support him for the N.Z. Cun and m addition to his other nomination, Apa. he secured some thousands m doubles with fancied

candidates and many hundreds straight out. The talc ol the race is told elsewhere, and it only remains to add that there is a two-year-old halfbrother to 'Frisco by Handsome Jack, and also a foal at Placid's foot by the imported English sire, Sir Laddo.
