A GREAT HORSE.
Poseidon's, greatness may be said ■to have commenced with the winning of the .A.J.C. Derby last year. He then went to Victoria and won the Caulfield Cup. A couple of weeks later he won the* V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup. Last Saturday he once more won the Caulfield Cup. Despite his great deeds of last year a certain section of horse critics said that Poseidon was not a great horse. They said "the Caulfield ; and Melbourne Cups fields of 1906 contained no good horses," nor did the Derbies contain, any good three-year-olds. These opinions on Poseidon never altered, and when he finished an indifferent third to Mountain King and lolaire m the Craven Plate, the "I told you so" and the "'What about Poseidon now ?." fairly rent the air. It would be interesting to know wha-t some of these alleged "best judges m Australia" think now. Their. Poseidon opinion may be still, the same, and they will perhaps say that the horses he beat m this year's,. Caulfield Cup are absolutely no good at all. If, Poseidon continued to win all the Caulfield Cups during the nest ten years with an occasional Melbourne Cup thrown m, would his- detractors then admit that he is a great horse?— Sydney "Sportsman."
