'FRISCO'S JOCKEY.
I. G. King. The subject of this paragraph hati the mount on 'Frisco when he won the N.Z. Cup last Saturday, and without wishing to unduly idolise him I think that* a lot of credit is due to him for the able manner m which he handled the colt. As soon as possible after the weighing m process was over I looked out King to get him to recount his experiences during the race. He was too ill then to speak to anyone, and it was some hours before he recovered. However, I was fortunate enough to have a very pleasant five minutes chat with him. He said, "I was born m Dunedin and had my first ride on a horse belonging to the Hon. Geo. McLean, when Jas. McGinnis trained fqr that gentleman, some fourteen years ago. Since that time I have been riding always and have now won four Cups, viz., a Dunedin Cup, and Otago Cup, an Oamaru Cup, an Ashburton.Cup, and now the N.Z. Cup. I have ridden m five N.Z. Cups, and' have been placed on four occasions. When we hopped off m this race I 'was m the centre •of the field, but passing the stand I sent the little horse up .into ' about fourth position just alongside Apa, and immediately behind Elevation and Probable, who were a couple oE lengths behind Mahuta. I was never further back than this,, and when we were' at the H mile, post I thought the race, was as good as won. However, when we were, about 7£ furlongs from home I had an . accident which nearly lost me the race. It was like, this, Elevation stumbled and nearly came down, and before I could stop 'Frisco, who was right behind, he was right on top of Elevation. But we were lucky and got put of it, and then I knew I would Win. Half-a-mile from home Mahuta was still m front, and Apa was next to him. then came my horse. Once fairly into the straight I had Apa gone, but meanwhile 'Master' .Delaval had come from behind and was m front of Mahuta. Then I gave 'Frisco a cut and he fairly flew, as he does not like tlie whip. After this I did not touch him. and as you know I won very easily." Asked if he saw any horse m the race have bad luck, and if it altered the result, King was very emphatic, m his "No." Elevation certainly had a bad passage, but on the day the best horse won." He seems to be a very lazY horse, but when warmed up to it he can gallop, and moreover is a born stayer.
