KIWIS AND PARAKEETS
THEIR INCREASE IN NELSON THE BIBBS* ENEMY. In a report furnished to the Minister for. Internal Affairs (th© Hon It. F. Bollard). Mr It. E. Clouston, caretaker of the Gouland Downs Sanctuary, Nelson district, states that ’the native bird kiwi has considerably increased in numbers in the sanctuary area during the past season. "Besides the kiwi," says Mr Clouston, "the smaller birds have increased, and so has the .small yellow-headed parakeet. The last mentioned bird has been very rare in this district for the last tweuty years, and I am pleased to say that it is now on the increase." The report goes on to say that some forty years ago, tho yellow-headed parakeet cam! to the district in thousands, and that their advent was sig’nali.sed by the coming of the native rat (kiore), xivhic.li caused, great havoc amongst the young of the birds. The native rat was again appearing, and Mr Clouston, on examining several of the birds* nests, found rats in them.
