WEEK-END FIRES

HOMES DESTROYED HISTORIC RESIDENCE BURNT, Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. The historic Hoon Hay residence, of 16 rooms, built by the Hon. Ernest Gray, was destroyed by fire on' Saturday. It was untenanted at the time. The building was insured for £I2OO in the South British Office. , BLENHEIM, April 19. Moore’s building was insured for £7OO in the State Office. OTAKI, April 19. A five-roomed house at Paraparaumu, owned by Mrs Jack Field and occupied by Mr Eric Weggery, was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. The insurance on the house was £3OO. AUCKLAND, April 19. A five-roomed house at Avondale, owned and occupied ,by F. J. Scott, was destroyed by fire at 4 a.m. on Sunday. Mr Scott, who was alone, escaped through dense smoke. Nothing was saved. The house was insured for £550, and the furniture for £l5O.
