OBITUARY
MR WOLF HARRIS A London cablegram - reporta death at the advanced age of 92 years of Mr Wolf Harris, who was head of the well-known firm of Messrs Bing. Harris and Co. The deceased gentleman was born in Poland iu 1833, and.after leaving for Australia, where he remained lo* six years, he came to New Zealand in 1857. * In 1864 Mr Hams journeyed to London and there made his permanent residence, returning to New Zealand only on holiday ana businem trips, the last of which was made in 1898. He gave with more than ordinary liberality, and the citizens of Dunedin have cause to remember with gratitude his many benefactions to the city. It was due to the generosity of Mr Harris that the Plunket Society obtained the land on which the Kari-tane-Harris Hospital now stands m Dunedin, ,and the society has on several occasions been the recipient of substantial donations from the deceased gentleman. He had also subscribed freely to the Otago University. The city of Dunedin was his debtor in respect to many of its handsomest and most useful public ornaments, among which may be n&med the flagstaff in tho Queen’s Gardens, the iron gates of the Southern Reserve, and last, .but not least, the ornamental fountain which used to stand in the Triangle, and which is now such an attractive addition to the Grand Court at the Exhibition.
Mr Harris, who had been ailing for the past two years, is survived by two sons and a daughter. The elder son, Mr Leslie Harris, is a* present in Dunedin, having arrived from London ih January last. Mr Percy Harris is Libeial member for the London constituency of Bethnal Green, whilst the daughter, Mrs Bensaude, is at present resident in Paris.
