WELLINGTON

HICKS IN DIVING FORM OTHERS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. (By Telegraph—Special to "Timas/’) NAPIER, January 25. Ideal conditions prevailed for the second dav of the national swimming championships. Claridge was in the first preliminary heat of 400 yards, which was held in the morning, but after making the pace for the first two lengths he faded away and finished last, 2-ssec outside standard time. J. Cameron, the second heat, put up a better showing by swimming into third plaje and qualifying for the final, which proved too fast for him over tho early stages. The first 100 yards was nut cut in 64cec. with Dowsett leading, but from this on, Baird took the lead, and, swimming with judgment, won by three yards from Pelham, Lindsay beating Enwright for third place by a touch. All the placed men broke tho standard time of 2min 43sec. The first stage of the diving championship wad an excellent display.

Hicks (Wellington), "Walker (Otago) and Calder (Otago) were the outstanding performers, but a more difficult series has to be completed on Wednesday evening. W. Cameron, of Wellington, was hopelessly outclassed in the intermediate boys’ 400 yards, not securing a place. Bridson dipped nine seconds off his previous New Zealand record. The polo match this evening between Auckland and Canterbury was more even than the score indicates, and was the best seen at a championship meeting for yems. Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury are now left to contest the final.
