KEEN CONTESTS AT NAPIER AUCKLANDERS BREAK RECORDS MISS PAGE WINS AGAIN Per Press Association. NAPIER, January 25. The New Zealand swimming championships were continued tomight before a very large attendance of spectators. Splendid swimming was again witnessed. L. Fairgray (Auckland) clipped 1 4-5 sec off his own 150yds backstroke record. In the 440 yards intermediate boys’ championship G. Bridson (Auckland) lowered his own record by 9sec, putting up a splendid performance. Results 220 YARDS (MEN). New Zealand record: Time, 2min 31 3- by L. L. Kronfeld (Auckland). Holder of the title, J. Enwright (Auckland). First Heat. —A. E. Baird (Auckland), 1; D. Pelham (Auckland), 2; D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury), 3. Also started: C. Claridge (Wellington). Time, 2min 36sec. Getting away to a good start the swimmers set a steady pace, Claridge being the first to show out with the rest two yards behind. Going into the third lap Baird swam into second place and continued to increase his pace until in the fifth lap when he assumed the lead. Claridge then gave way to Pelham, who challenged in the last lap, but Baird maintained, his lead to finish two yards to the good. Lindsay fought for second place, but was beaten by half an arm’s length. Second Heat.—J. Cameron (Wellington), 1: N. Dowsett (Wanganui), 2; J. Enwright (Auckland), 3. Only starters. Time, Zmin 36 2-ssec. From a beautiful start the three settled down to take matters easy. The race was uninteresting, Dowsett leading Cameron over the first five laps with Enwright hanging three yards behind. Over tho last 20 yards things brightened, Cameron putting in a fine finish to land the verdict by inches. Enwright was five yards behind Final. A. E. Baird (Auckland) 1 D. Pelham (Auckland) 2 D. Getting away to a good start Dowsett led the way over the first lap, but was overhauled by Pelham in the second, closely followed by Baird and Enwright. Turning into the fourth lap Baird, with steady strokes, drew up with Enwright, Lindsay and Dowsett surrendering the lead. On the fifth Pelham made himself apparent, Lindsay keeping him company past Enwright into second position. Baird kept his advantage, Lindsay and Pelham fighting it out two yards in his wake. With a great hurst Baird shot across the line two yards ahead of Pelham, who touched half an arm’s length in front of Lindsay. 220 YARDS (LADIES). New Zealand record time. 2min 47seo by Miss G. Miss Edser being well in the rear. Entering on the third lap Miss Page swam into second place with Miss Stockley at her heels. Entering the fifth lap Miss Page captured the lead, and set a pace too fast for Miss Bell. On the last lap the leader drew further ahead. Twenty yards from home Miss Stockley challenged Miss Bell, and in a great finish was narrowly beaten for second place. Miss Page finished two yards ahead of Miss Bell, with Miss Stockley a touch behind. 150 YARDS BACKSTROKE (MEN). New Zealand record: Time, linin 56 4- by L. Fairgray (Auckland). Miss Wbvman was just beaten for second by Miss Simmonds, vho swam a splendid race. The time was below the Hawks’s Bay record. Two feet separated Misses Whyman and Champion. Second Heat.—. Miss M. A good start saw Misses Jipson, Lynch, and Farquhar together for the first lap when Miss Jipson drew ahead. Miss Farquhar fell into second place, followed by Miss Lynch. At the turn for home Miss Magee drew into third position behind Miss Farquhar. The latter challenged the leader,_ hut was stalled off, Miss Jipson fi/Hslrng a yard ahead. In the second Inn Miss Jipson with steady strokes drew away with Miss Miller at her heels and Miss Farquhar handy. In the final lan Miss Jipson spurted and touched half a yard ahead of Miss Farquhar. A great tmsle for second place ensued between Miss Farquhar and Miss Miller, the former gaining tho verdict by inches.

With 100 yards to go, Bridson was nearly three-quarters of a length ahead of the second man, and in a fine burst shot over nearly a lap in front of Rylands.
