TENNIS AT MIRAMAR

SEMI-FINALS REACHED MALFROY PLAYING WELL . , MISS TRACY IN FINAL The Wellington provincial tennis championships were continued at the Miramar courts yesterday in ideal weather conditions. Some good ploy was witnessed, and the semi-finals were reached in a few of the events. The organisation of the tournament is not the best, and although Mr McLennan is doing his utmost to facilitate the arrangements, he cannot do it alone. The consequence was that the result board yesterday wa6 so far behind in recording the scores of the various matches that neither the public nor the Press could ascertain the exact position of the tournament. In the afternoon many of the players wrote in their own results for the edification of their companions. The catering does not call for eloquent tribute. The courts are playing well, and plpyers are loud in their praise of them. STEADINESS PREVAILS Dawson, by virtue of his steadiness and his keenness, succeeded in reaching the fourth round of the singles after effecting one or two surprises, but the excellent placing, steady driving and good volleying of Wheeler asserted itself, when he managed to enter the semi-final 6tage»s in straight sets. * Malfroy reversed his defeat by Lampe at Palmerston North by defeating the Wanganui crack in straight sets after a splendid game. Malfroy, by driving down the side line and maintaining a splendid length, kept Lampe from the net, where he is most dangerous. In the semi-final Smyth played below thrf form which enabled him to defeat Prance, but he had no difficulty with Wheeler, despite the latter’s shadiness. Smyth kept Wheeler on the move, but Wheeler earned applause by good smashing from the back of the’court. He was fairly steady in his driving, but superior court tactics on the part of Smyth carried the day. Driving straight down the side line, and displaying superior court craft, Malfroy completely overwhelmed Donovan in straight sets, 6—2, 6—o, 6—o. : Donovan played only as he was allowed to. AMONG THE LADIES Contrary to expectations, Mrs Campbell heat Mrs Marshall, after losing the first set, 6—o. ) In the third set, where they were even at 5 all, the tennis was of an unenterprising variety. Mrs Campbell further added to her laurels by defeating Mrs Heald, 6 —4, 6 —2. She Was unable, however, to deal effectively with the versatility of Miss Tracy, who Dlayed at the top of her form. The game in the semi-final between Miss East and Mrs Penlington was one of such excellent tennis by the former as she has seldom been seen to play, hitting hard with consistent length and having no difficulty with Mrs Penlington’s natural cut snots. Misses Tracy and Whyte, in the ladies’ doubles, have held their own through the superior driving of Miss Tracy. The match between Miss East and Miss Mountier against Miss D. Howe and Mrs Brown, was a marathon, and wholly uninteresting, the players occupying the courts for two hours. Miss Howe was fortunate in bringing off the gitls’ championship singles, ana she met a greatly-improvea Miss Preedy. Had the latter won the second set she might have won the third. Thioughout the match the France-Wil-eon combination met no difficulty, nor did the Lampe-Smyth combination. In the boys’ singles, Malfroy made the others appear novices.
