DISAPPOINTING
MASSEY MEMORIAL APPEAL POOR RESPONSE AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, September 19. The result of the appeal in the Auckland provinoe for contributions to the Massey national memorial fund has so far proved very disappointing, the total of the various amounts forwarded to the provincial treasurer being only £1240. At a meeting of the Auckland provincial committee, held at the Town Hall, the treasurer reported that about 700 lists had been sent out to various local bodies throughout the provinoe, and the majority nad now been returned, the total amount of subscriptions accompanying them being £672. The amount of city contributions included in the Town Hall list was £568, making a grand total of £1240. Promises of an addjtionnl £SO had been received in the city, and there were a number of suburban and country lists yet to be returned. Members of the committee agreed that the result was disappointing, and it wag stated that the decision made at the outset of the campaign that there should he no personal canvgss, but that the people shoujd merely be asked to make their contributions at central points, had militated against a better result. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the subscription lists still outstanding be closed at the end of the present month.
