WHERE WERE THE CARS?
PLIGHT OF ATHLETIC PARK PATRON 9. A discontented enthusiast, who signs himself “Banker,” writes as follows: Generally, when there is a football match played at Athletic Park, several tramcars are waiting to convey visitors to town, but on Saturday last not a single one was there when the match ended. After an irritating wait, two half-filled cars come along from Island Bay, and there was a scramble to get aboard as a heavy shower of rain was seen to he coming along. Hundreds walked to the foot of Rintoul street only to find their plight as had as before, for every car from Newtown was crowded by visitors to Newtown Park to see the big match there. Those who started to walk home got caught in the rain, and some very nasty things were said about tiie tramway department. As one man remarked, “Athletic Park patrons keep the tramways going to an appreciable extent, and it was not right to divert the cars to Newtown Park because for once there was a large attendance there.”
