SYRIA STILL UNSETTLED
FRENCH AGAIN ATTACKED MANY CHRISTIANS HOMELESS. Router’s Telegram. (Received September 20, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, September 19. A message from Beirut states that a strong force of Druses last night attacked the French garrison at Mousseifre. The fight raged until ten in the morning, when the Druses retired, leaving several hundred dead. The French claim to have captured a Druse standard, end to have suffered few casualties. Newspapers from Beirut describe the situation of the Jebel Druse as unsettled as ever. The new chief, Commander Camelin, is organising forces to relieve the Sueida garrison, which is being provisioned daily in the hope that it will hold out. "Le Matin” publishes a letter from the Archbishop of Hanran, stating that 5000 Christians of his diocese were expelled from their homes by the Druses, and are now living in the open air. Over 800 Frenchmen were killed, or are missing, as the result of the recent fighting.
