HARRIERS
(Notes by “Pacemaker.”) The harrier season will be practically finished to-day when the annual road race for the Bennett Memorial Shield will bo held. This will be the last interclub race of the season, but most of the clubs will be holding their consolation races next Saturday. * * * * The distance of the race is about seven miies. Starting from the Star Boating Club’s shed in Wakefield street, the course leads round Oriental Bay, past the Patent Slip to Evans Bay, up Wellington road to Constable street, thence along Adelaide road to Courtenay Place, and back to the starting point, via Wakefield street. * * * * The present holders of the shield are the Olympic Club, who should give a good account of thepiselves again this year. The Masterton. Club are sending down a team, and with Rose and Heffer they should prove a stiff proposition. Brooklyn and Hutt have also entered strong teams, and must be considered in the running. At the time of writing it is not known whether Scottish have entered a team, but Wellington have entered. In any case both these clubs have one good, man each, but they have not sufficient backing. * # * * It is rather a difficult matter to forecast the result of the teams’ race. There is a vast difference between running across country and running on a haTa road. A man might bo a good crosscountry runner, and yet crack up on a road. * * * * Rose will be the first man home, nobody will dispute that point. It will probably be found that Todd, Heffer, and Wilson will be the next to finish. This gives Masterton two men in the first four, which will be a big advantage when the final numbers go up. Summed up, there should not be much between the first four teams, but Maeterton should be just ahead of the others. The competing teams are as follow*: —-Brooklyn : A team —G. C. Sherwood, D. Todd, A. Barclay. A. Meit, L. C. Todd; B team—S. Willis, T. Tipton, E. Rose, N. Berry, A. E. Davies. Hutt Valley: A team — R. Kent, J. McKee, G. Dome, A. Dome, and J. Hutton; B team —N. Craig, V. Smith, A. Eyrs, T. Hurley, J. Dome; O team —A. Kent, D. Hope, F. Evi&on, F. Sanderfi, D. Smellie. Masterton: A team—R. A. Rose, E. J. Heffer, L. A. Keats, R. Campbell, L. Smith; B team — H. Orman, N. Trass, S. Spicer, L. Trass, B. Peters. Olympic: A team —W. Scatchard, J. Perston, P. Wilson, Cook, and Lankshear ; B team — Crosbie, Workman, Lovatt, Mackay, and Ormrod ; emergencies, Williams, French, and Blair. Wellington: R. Watson, J. Robinson, E. Green, L. Watson, F. Peterson; emergency, W. Donaldson.
A. W. Carr, mentioned as the man likely to captain England against the Australian eleven, is known to Australians. He gave the A.I.F. & shock. Playing under "Plum” Warner in a strong Gentlemen of England side against the A.1.F., lie rattled up 50 on a soft wicket in dashing style. That was a disastrous match for the Diggers. They got the wet end of the wicket and came a crash. Johnny Taylor top-scored in the first innings with 23. Against Armstrong’s team Carr made 15 and 31 for Notts in the match in which Macartney made 345 in less than four hours.
