SENT TO CAOL

TAKAPUNA MAORIS. REFUSE TO VACATE LAND. AUCKLAND. March 23. Hie Maoris who were ordered to vacate the Awataha block, the native 'settlement at the head of Shaol Bay, near Takapuna, refused to obey the instruction of the court. This morning they were arrested nv Constable Flavell, of Northcote, and the three women and five men concerned were .brought to Auckland by ferry steamer at about 11.80 o’clock. They are to undergo seven days’ imprisonment. The eight Maoris were accompanied by their six children, and other native friends, who took a temporary farewell. Constable Flavell is well-known to the natives, having on many occasions visited their village in connection with health matters and other business. Ho was, therefore, enabled to effect the arrest without resistance. It is under stood that if any other member of “the force” had attempted to arrest the Maoris trouble might have been expected. Fortunately, by tactful handling of the situation, a demonstration was obviated, though on former occasions in the same settlement a show of force met with stout resistance.
