FRACAS ON STEAMER

BETWEEN WHITE AND COLOURED CREW. FIREMAN STABBED IN THE BACK. A brawl on the tramp steamer Trekieve between white and coloured members of the crew resulted in a coloured man named Broone, a, fireman, receiving a stab in the back.' Missiles of every description were hurtling through the air, and a piece of iron 18 inches long was thrown by one of the crew, but it missed the man it was aimed at and hurled itself in the deok. The wharf police received the summons at about 12.15 p.m. on Saturday morning, and hastened to the Trekieve which was berthed at the Queen’s wharf, No. 1. On arriving there the crew had dispersed, and the identity of the man who stabbed Broone was not discovered. The cause of the trouble was apparently dislike of the white seamen for the coloured portion of the crew, and this dislike eventually led to a free fight. The injured man was removed to the hospital, and although he had lost a considerable amount of blood, his condition was stated to be “not serious,” and at a late hour last night he was reported to bo a little better. The Trekieve left Wellington for Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon soon after the occurrence. The police are making inquiries with a view to effecting an arrest.
