LABOUR DISPUTES
AND HOW TO SETTLE THEM. “PAT HALLY, PEACEMAKER.” Something of a record, it lis stated, has ibeen established in connection with the Auckland Canister Makers’ Indus trial Dispute. Ihe documents were received by the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr P. Hally), the hearing by assessors took place a day later, ana although the parties had not arrived at any agreement beforehand, or even met in conference, the whole of the clauses were satisfactoiily adjusted, a recommendation to the court signed by the assessors and the award will be filed by the Arbitration Court immediately after. The employees will therefore enjoy the effect of increased wages at their first payment of the New Year. This is probably the most expeditious settlement recorded in any industrial dispute heard by the Conciliation Council since the Arbitration Act came into force in 1894. This and other splendid achievements in the matter of preventing industrial strife has earned for the Conciliation Commissioner the title of “Pat Hally, Peacemaker.”
