EXTENSIVE BUSH-FIRE
TOWNSHIPS ENDANGERED. CONFLAGRATION ON WEST COAST. Per Press Association. GERYMOUTH, October 11. Bush fires driven by an easterly wind, to-day, threatened to wipe out the township of Kokiri on the Midland railway line A five-roomed house owned by Percy Rtade was destroyed in the absence of the occupants. At Baxter’s siding fires began the day previous, the changing wind driving them, towards the township where tbe school and sawmill were endangered. The latter ceased catting to go fire-fighling One stack of timber was burned. The residents fought the flames till a patch of fallen bush stayed their progress. The latest advices are that the fires are dying out, but the district is overhuDg with a thick pall of Smoke. Bush fixes were (also in evidence at Dcnollie, Rvnangaj BaiTytown, Ooatcreek, and Cobden Hills district, but no serious damage has been reported.
