RUSSIAN TROOPS
ADVANCE TOWARDS POLAND. I A STATE OF WAR, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 19, 8.5 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, January 18. Advices from Russia report that Smolensk is in a state of war. All troops at Vitebsk and Smolensk have been sent south-west. The military have requistioned all trains, and fortifications are being constructed in the Dvina district. Reconnoitring detachments of Red troops have advanoed towards Braslav, which is occupied by the Poles. A cable message published yesterday stated: “A reliable message from Moscow states that the Soviet has decided to mobilise five years’ conscripts, intending to assist Germany if armed resistance to the French occupation becomes feasible.” THOUSANDS IDLE EFFECT IN NEWFOUNDLAND. Two thousand five hundred iron miners are idle as the result of the closing of the Wabana mines, Newfoundland, owing to the suspension of German contracts following the French occupation of the Ruhr. (Received January 19, 8.5 p.m.) PARIS January 19. The Chamber of Deputies deprived Cachin of his Parliamentary immunity from arrest. Marcel Cachin a Communist, and a member of the Chamber of Deputies, attended a Communist conference in Germany, in connection with the Ruhr occupation. The Governemnt intends to charge him with treason, with having intercourse with foreign hostile bodies, and with plotting against the security of the State. GERM AN_ MARK QUITE USELESS AS MONEY. 105,000 MARKS TO £l. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 19, 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, January 18. The exchange on Berlin is now 105,000 marks to the £l, after touching 115,000. This,- means that the mark is valueless for all practical purposes.
About a week ago the exchange was 48,000.
