DUKE OF YORK
ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION. BY LONDON CROWDS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 19, 7.35 p.m.) LQNDON, January 19. The Duke of York had an enthusiastic reception in London when attending a dinner of the Industrial Welfare Society, of which he is president. Crowds waited in the streets and cheered the Duke on his first public appearance since his .engagement. Speaking at the banquet, the Duke referred to the problems of industrial welfare. “Men of all classes,” he said, “are convinced that industry must be dealt with in a new spirit, if we are going to get straight the difficulties which trouble the nation. Scientific investigation must be applied to social conditions.”
The Duke said: “On behalf of my future wife and myself, I thank the very many who have showered congratulations and good wishes upon us. We are deeply touched by the expressions of goodwill.’’
