(Received July 2, 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, June 30. _ Dr. Helfferich lias fled from Berlin for an unknown destination. Excitement prevails in the provincial towns, furious mobs invading monarchists’ houses and throwing pictures and busts of the Kaiser into the streets. Dr. Helffericlh is known as one of the leaders of the movement for the re-establishment of the monarchy. He held the portfolio of finance in the Cabinet presided over by Herr von Bethmann-Hollweg.
RATHENAU’S DEATH
ADMISSION BY DRIVER OF CAR. Reuter’s Tele-Tr.-vm BERLIN, Juno 30. Ernest Techow, arrested for the murder of Dr Rathenau, admitted that he was aware of the plot, and that he drove the car from which the shots were fired. Gunther was von Ludendorff’s secretary. The Nationalist Party furnished him with papers enabling him to use various names.
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE.
SECRET SOCIETIES NOT TO BE TOLERATED. BERLIN, June 30. President Ebert has issued a decree, stating that members of secret societies planning the murder of prominent men are liable to the death penalty, or to penal servitude for life. People who know of the existence of such societies are liable to penal servitude if they do not inform the authorities, or if they fail to warn anyone threatened by the societies.
