THE OPIUM CASE

JENS SORENSEN APPEALS AGAINST SENTENCE'. An appeal by Jens Sorensen, a Dane, employed as a greaser on the s.s. Moeraki, against a fine of £250, in default six months’ imprisonment, imposed on him by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., on a charge of having in his possession eight tins of opium, was heard by His Honour Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme. Court yesterday. A coat containing five tins of opium was found behind the door of a cabin on the Moeraki, and it was proved t 0 the magistrate’s satisfaction that the coat belonged to Sorensen. The defence was that it had not been proved that Sorensen was the owner of the coat. After examining the prisoner at length in regard to his movements, His Honour remarked that tho production of the log-book might weaken the case for the prosecution, if it confirmed Sorensen’s evidence as to whether he was on duty when ho was seen by two witnesses. The court was adjourned till 10 a.m. to-day for such evidence.
