MORE ROOM NEEDED
AT THE BOYS’ COLLEGE. CHECKING THE INFLUX. The pressure of space at the Wellington Boys’ College was the subject of some remarks made by the headmaster in his monthly report to the Board of Governors yesterday. \Mr T. R. Cresswell stated that the enrolments were already too great for the available accommodation. Farther 1 accommodation was required for three more classes. The difficulty would be emphasised next year if the natural increase was maintained, and in order to check the excessive influx he recommended the 'board to notify parents by advertisement that it would not accept new entrants next year from Hutt, Petone, etc., except those pupils who possessed special qualifications. The board was empowered by free place regulations to take the step, as there were district high schools in Lower Hutt and I .Petone. This would probably prevent j about 40 pupils from entering. These : pupils were, as a matter of fact, some;what of an impediment to the smooth | working of the school. They oaane ; late, often had to leave early, and I were generally not able to take part in the outdoor activities of the college. ! The chairman (Mr W. F. Ward) re- | marked that it' would be a pity if they had to take the step of debarring pupils . from Hutt and Petone.
Mr R. Darroch said that arrangements were being made for the establishment of a district high school at Petone. There were already high schools in the district, and he thought the step a proper one. The chairman: You can establish as many district high schools as you like; bat parents will etillb be wanting to send their children into the. college. The board decided to notify the Education Department of the position and of the headmaster’s suggestion.
