THE R ACE FOR THE TURNBULL GUP.

The annual race for the Turnbull Cup will be sailed to-day. This and the Mills Cup, sailed last Saturday, are the two big events of the year in the Port Nicholson V ach t Club’s programme. The Turnbull Cup was -presented by the executors of the late Mr A. H. Turnbull. Besides being a- great collector of books and historical documents (his collection was bequeathed to the State), Mr Turffhull was a keen yachtsman. In 1894 he had the yacht Ilona, and won many races with her, including the New Zealand championship in her class. The- splendid cup which ho won on that occasion is now the Alexander Turnbull Memorial Cup. Later, Mr Turnbull owned the lorangi, now in Auckland, still one of the fastest yachts in the Dominion. He was commodore of the club for a number of years in the ’nineties. The cup is a handsome solid silver loving cup valuelS-at fifty guineas, and may be wou outright by the same owner winning tMte race for it three years in succession or five times at intervals. Club prizes for first and second yachts ore also allocated to this race. The entries are Mnrangi, Rona, Wanderer, Viola, Atala-nta, Wairere 11, Ailsa-. Last year the cup was won by Wanderer.
