March 17—Otaki A.A.C., Otaki. March 19 —University inter - Faculty Sports, Kel bum Park. March 2&—Country Clubs Championships, Palmerston North. March 28—Waikanae A.A.C., Waikanae. TO-DAY’S SPORTS. At the Basin Reserve this afternoon the combined local clubs are holding a sports gathering, which promises to be the best meeting ever held in New Zealand. The entries are a record for an amateur -meeting, and as the handicapper is well acquainted with the form of the competitors, the finishes are bound to be exciting. Tile star event of the day, the 440 yards Ladies’ Braeelet, has drawn a field of 44 runners, and I do not see how the officials are going to find room on the track for ttia-D number. It should be a real spectacular event. W. Candy, the New Zealand champion over this distance, will have to run up to his best form to win. C. M. Walden, of Canterbury, who was responsible for G. Davidson equalling the New Zealand record in the 220 yards at Auckland by the way-'he forced the pace, looks like annexing the 220 yards event tq-day. The three mile run is sure to be - great race, and I am predicting W. i Scratchard to beat the time put up by G. Webber at Auckland last Saturday. J. Lang, another. Canterbury representative, is starting off 100 yards in this event, and should just about win. E. G. Sutherland will endeavour to put up an Australasian record with the javelin, and should have no difficulty m doing so. Never before at a club meeting have the public had tibe opportunity of seeing so many champions in action on one day. There "will be P- Munro, Australasian and New Zealand champion shot-putter; J. McHolm, Atistralasian and New Zealand champion hammerthrower ; H. B. Wilso-n, English, Australasian and New Zealand hurdle champion: also W. Candy, New Zealand 440 yards champion ; E. G. Sutherland, New Zealand high, jump chain pion; and C. M. Walden, Canterburyprovincial champion over 220 yards. Surely to seo these men in action should ensure a record attendance! Besides the above names all the winners of our local championships will be competing. J. McKenzie and F. O. Hickling, recognised as the two fairest exponents of the art of walking, will fight their Auckland contest over againThe public schools of Wellington have, after numerous trials, found their run-, ning champions, and thev will meet in the 100 yards (Blundell Cup) to-day* As we look to our secondary schools to provide our future champions, so to-day we will see in the intec-college championship (Blundell Cup) what material will be available. The Masterton bicycle riders will arrive this -morning, and will provide some interesting racing. The officers and men of the H.M.S. Chatham have been invited to attend, and a few races are being put on for' their benefit. The Patriotic Society’s Band has offered its services for the gathering, mid should enliven the proceedings with its popular music. The officials are all working hard to make this gathering »' huge success, and their efforts should satisfy all those who attend.
The first event is scheduled to start at 2.15 p.m. Next Saturday, at Kelburn Park, the Victoria University sports will take -place. This is a free show, and plenty of good talent competing. After these sports the team to represent the Victoria College at the New Zealand University Championships at Christchurch will he picked.
