HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING DETAILS OF BUSINESS TRANSACTED. The monthly meeting of the above council was held at Wellington yesterday. Present: Councillors John BarI clay (chairman), A. I. Mackay, J. Whiteman, M. W. Welch, H. D. Atkineon, and A. R. Edwards. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : Front Public Works Department to Pukerua beach road, stating it was not a legal one, and until it was made such-the department- could not declare it a- county road. Once it was a- legal road it automatically became a county road.—The chairman said the council had been advised that the road was a legal one.—Decided to send a copy of the department’s letter to M r Gray. From District Health Officer, reporting nuisances at Nai Nai and Belmont. —The clerk reported that he had served the necessary notices on the persons concerned.

From New Zealand Railways agreeing to erect warning boards at Paraparaumu and Haekakariki, provided the council maintained them.—Agreed to.

From E. J. Hayward complaining of the growth of gone on the roads at ’ Taita.—Notice to be served on the owners of adjacent lands. , From W. Clifford declining the position of dog-tax collector, as he had i. keen appointed to a permanent posi- , tion.—Accepted, and the position left , to the inspector to nominate a suitable [ person in each riding, the fee for each i dog to be 9d. From J. EVans calling attention to . a dangerous tree at-Day’s Bay.—To be given attention. From Mrs Anstice asking permission to erect a fence on a road at Day’s v Bay.—Referred to the inspector and councillor for t-he riding. - Resolutions that- the Raumati drainage district be divided into two sub--1 divisions, and that- a special loan of £2OO be raised over one for the pur--1 pose of deepening a portion of the drain, and the necessary steps be taken to give effect to the proposals, were carried. It was decided to apply to the Advances Department for a loan of From Mazeng&rb and Barton (solici-, tors) stating. Whiteman Bros, were’ claiming £23 15s from the inspector for rent accrued. A court case was held previously, when _ judgment was given for the council. The inspector said he held money in trust for Whiteman Bros., pending the decision of the court.—Decided to refer the letter to the council’s solicitor, with a view to protecting the council’s inspector. From McGhie Bros, asking for rates on their property at Akatarawa to be remitted. —No action. WADDINGTON ESTATE. A deputation from the VTaddington estate waited on the -council and pointed out that the road through the estate was impassable, and asked that the council not take it over till in order. The road needed blinding, and at present only a strong draught horse could pull an empty dray along. The drain had not been cleared; there were no approaches to the sections; the comber on the road was too steep; the,culvert was inadequate, while another one .was necessary, otherwise the water would flow over the sections. « The Lands Department Baid _ they had spent all the money available, and the deputation asked that the inspector inspect the road and see for himself that the complaints were justified. Councillor Welch moved that the road be not taken over till the Government put it in perfect order, failing this a deputation wait on the Minister for lands to have the matter righted. —Carried. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. Mr J. W. Cudby (inspector) reported that the small bridge at tie foot of the Rimutaka was in a bad way, while the one next to it needed attention. Both had been temporarily repaired. The Monganui road contract was progressing satisfactorily, while Matai road, on the Raumati estate, was nearing completion. He hadybeen over it with Mr Hyde, and found the previous portion formed was being badly cut up, but everything possible was being done by the syndicate to keep it in order. They had one man. horse, and dray on continuously, which should leave the whole section of road in fair order. A plan of a small bridge for Moonshine valley road had been prepared. An ; inspection of the roads on the Wainui-o-mata valley had been inspected, and where necessary would be attended to. A concrete culvert had been put in at Whiteman’s valley, and the email bridge taken out. ’ Arrangements had been made to cart 300 yards of shingle for Pahautanui at 3s 6d per yard. 'Hie motor-lorry was still working at Pakuratahi. and was doing five trips per day, _ the distance to cart being, approximately, six miles, which worked out at 8s 3d per yard quarried, hauled, and spread on the road. THE RANGER AND DOG-TAX. The ranger reported seizing 42 head of stock during the month, and offered to do the dog-tax collecting at Is per dog.—Request not granted. , It was stated that last year only 250 dogs out of between 600 and 700 ■had been registered. " The engine-driver reported that repairs had been effected to the plant, but, in his opinion, were not satisfactory, and he doubted if the work would hold.—lt was considered that the plant should have been inspected before it left the repairer’s hands. Accounts, amounting to £2218 were passed for payment.
