AMATEUR ATHLETICS

CARNIVAL ON SATURDAY. GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO BE PRESENT. AH arrangements have now been completed for the sports gathering *o .be held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday next by the Wellington, Athletic, and University Amateur Athletic Clubs. Entries to the number of over 200 have been received for this meeting, which will be the last, of the season, and include some of the Dominion s best known athletes. C. M. Walden, of Christchurch, who ran -second to G. Davidson in the 280 yards New Zealand championship when the latter equalled the New Zealand record of 22aee, has now notified that he will be present to contest, the two sprint events. J. B. Lang, who also represented Canterbury at the New Zealand . championships, will be a competitor in the three mile event. Both these runners should give good accounts of themselves. H. E. Wilson, who performed so well last Saturday at Auckland, is now at the top of his form and should give of bis ibebt in the hurdle handicap and the 100 yards. The principal handicap of the day. the 440yds Ladies’ Bracelet, has drawn a field of over 40, and with W. Candy, of the Wairarapa on the hack mark, should prove a most spectacular event. Throwing the javelin and the discus are included in the programme, and, ae these events are comparatively new to New Zealand they will, no -doubt, be followed with a good deal of interest. Sutherland, the champion high dumper, has .shown that he is wdll up to Australasian championship form wfith the javelin. ' Two bicycle events—a mile and a two mite—have brought good fields, as also have the college and public schools championships. Seating accommodation round the ground is being arranged for for the benefit of patrons. His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Jelliobe) will attend during the afternoon should his arrangements permit. Members of the Ministry will also 'he present if at all possible.
