SANITARY INSPECTIONS

BOARD AND DEPARTMENT AT VARIANCE.

PEE rnEss ASSOCIATION. OAMARU, September 3,

The circular issued by the Waitaki Hospital Board recently to local authorities advocating that under tho new Public Health Act all sanitary inspections r should "oe carried out by Government Wrtectortf, has drawn adverse comment from the Minister for Public Health, both in the Press and in letters to local bodies who have approved of the proposal. Tho board has now replied to tho department stating that Government health inspectors under the board's proposals would enforce the sanitary meseures against individuals, but that waterworks, 6ewers, and other public conveniences would bo provided as at present by the local authorities. The department'* contention was most tin. Bound; that, it, cotild not. undertake sanitary inspections unless it aleo had the providing of waterwork, sewerage, etc. '"

: Tho board stated that the unsoundness of this argument was proved by the fact that although the Labour Department now enforces the provision of sanitary conveniences for-' shops and factories, it has no control over any sanitary, services. Further, the department does undertake sanitary inspections for winW'local authorities, al- ' though it will not control refuse rcj moral services or waterworks. Tho I board contends that the department ' should be consistent, and carry out tho : inspcotiona in all districts instead of I only in somo .as proposed.
