DISPUTE SETTLED
AT CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
MATCH-WORKERS AND EMPLOYERS ARRANGE TERMS. )
The dispute between the Wellington Match Factory Employees and Bryant and May, Bell and Company, Ltd., was heard before a Conciliation Council yesterday, the Commissioner (Mr. W Newton), 'presiding. The asseasors were as follow: For the employers, Messrs W. W. Lang, G. W. Lacy, It. \V#Kaberry; for the employees. Miss J. Patrick, Mrs M. Parsons, Mr E. Humphries, and Mr A. W. Grenfell acted for the employers, and Mr R. McKeen (secretary) for the employees. The claims of the union had been presented to tho employers at a. conference, hut the parties failed to loach a settlement. THE SETTLEMENT.
Aftur a long discussion yesterday a complete settlement was reached. A 45-hour week was agreed to, with a special" provision that men jequired to make preparation.for the work of the factory beforo 8 a.m. bo paid an extra Is 6d per day. The wages of male employees were agreed upon at Is 8d per hour, with a Jjonua of Id, the rate for youths being fixed as follow ■; Under 16, 25s per week; 16 to 18, 375, 18 to 20, 475; all youths to bo given a bonus of 3s. Female workers, who are engaged on piecework for the most part, were granted a 20 per cent, increase on present rates. Provision was made for payment for eight statutory holidays lor all workers at tho factory. The usual prefer - enco and under-rate workers' clauses were included in the award which will come into force on September 9th.
