RAILWAY OFFICIAL RETIRES
FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE. On Saturday last Mr S. P. Curtis, wno is retiring on superannuation, was officially farewelled' by the officers of" the head office and branches of the Now Zealand Railways. In asking Mr Curtis's acceptance of gifts for Mrs Curtis and himself, tho general manager <Mr R. W. McfViUy) referred to the respect and esteem in which ilj- Curtis was held by his fellow officers, and to the tact, perseverance, energy, courtesy, ability, and trustworthiness that had characterised his fifty years of office in the service of the State. On behalf'of the department, Mr McVilly expressed gratitude and thanks to .Mr "Curtis for his. esteemed, lengthy and honourable service whilst in the employ of the New Zealand Railways, and -trusted and hoped ihat his superannuation period would he a prolonged and happy one. Ho apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr H. Williams, chief accountant. Mr McVilly's laudatory remarks wore feelingly endorsed and supplemented by Mesjsrj. J. Macdonald (assistant general ' manager), H. Burton <chief traffic manager), J. Young (land officer.), and C. 'Batten (who epoko on behalf of the chief accountant's office). In the course of a characteristically cheerful response, Mr Curtis dwelt reminiscently on his early years in the service, and spoke in appreciative ternw of the men -with ivhom' he had been associated. Cheers for Mr and Mrs Curtis terminated the proceedings'.
