JOCKEYS ON STRIKE
AN AVONDALE INCIDENT. PROCEEDINGS DELAYED AN" HOUR. TEB PBESS ASSOCIATION'. AUCKLAND, April 10. After the running of the fifth raco, and after the jockeys had been weighed out and their names hoisted for the Waitakere Handicap, there was a "strike'' of horsemen, and apprentices bad to be requisitioned. Tho action of the jockeys in declining •to ride was over an inquiry, instituted in regard to a movement made by L .H. Hewitt on the opening day to bring about a hold-up when the weather was very bad. The inquiry had been'adjourned when the jockeys took action, and they sought to obtain a guarantee that Hewitt would not be disqualified. The stewards stated that the inquiry had been adjourned, but the jockeys would not go on without the guarantee.. As a result of the strikej the proceedings were delayed for over' an hour, and tho last race was run in the dusk. STEWARDS CONSIDER POSITION F«R PRESS ASSOCIATION. , AUCKLAND, April 11. The stewards of the 'Avondale Jockey Club sat for two hours last_evening considering the position in '' regard to the strike of jockeys at ye,stcrday's races. Tho matter was then adjourned for further consideration.
