SUGGESTED NEW TRAMWAY
LINKING UP WITH ISLANH BAY,
In the annual report of the Melrose Ratepayers’ and Electors’ Association, presented at the annual meeting last evening, the committeee stated that during the past six or eight months the association's energies had been mainly concerned in getting an amount for the new loan schedule for a tramway to the crest of the hill, with alternative extensions to Lyall Bay and Houghton Bay. In this connection, the Melrose and’ South Kilbirnie Tramway Extension League was formed six months ago, and the hon. secretary, Mr G. Chisholm, last night gave the meeting an account of its labour*. It was proposed to continue the new main road from the Zoo loop, along Crescent road, to the old Melrose Post Office. From that point much regrading would be necessary, and then the line would proceed along Sutherland crescent a short distance there by deviation to sections 643 and 659 to Hornsey road, from the above junction to -die new main road, should follow Houghton Bay road to Queen’* Hrive, and from there along Bees street to the Island Bay terminus. The above suggestions were advanced by a committee of two engineers and a builder, who stated that the proposed rout© would not offer and difficulties regarding the running of tho trams on the particular grade.
