SIX O’CLOCK CLOSING
POSITION OF, HOTEL-WORKERS. How are the hotel workers faring as the result of sis o’clock closing? Prior to the passing of the restrictive legislation a good deal was heard about the matter from the workers’ point of view, and from inquiries made by a “Timies” reporter yesterday it would appear that certain predictions are being slowly, but surely, borne out. As a natural sequence to the shortening of' bours, many hotel-keepers are finding that they can dispense easily with a. number of their hands. For instance, if a. man leaves his employment, the hotel-keeper is not anxious to fill the vacancy, and the result is that the number of positions usually open to hotel workers are gradually decreasing This applies more particularly to the country districts, where the hotelkeepers, to use an apt expression, have been “hard hit.” It. is yet early to gauge the position accurately from a general standpoint, hut, as a union official 'put it yesterday, things are not improving.
