A VACANT SEAT
SOUTHERN MAORI ELECTORATE MR. HENARE PARATA A PROBABLE CANDIDATE. Since the death of Mr Charles Parata, M.P. for the Southern Maori Electorate, speculation has been rife among the Maoris in the South Island as to who would bo the candidate to fill the vacancy. As the late Mr Parata was a member of the liberal Party, the question of choosing an official candidate rests with ; Sir Joseph Ward, who up till the present has made no announcement concerning matters. Recently, however, a number of representative Maoris requested Mr Honare Parata, brother of the late member, to offer himself for election, and it is understood that he has consented to do soThe prospective candidate, who is engaged in farming in Puketeraki, Otago, the home of the Parata family, is well-known and popular. He resided in the Wairarapa for some considerable time, where ho was adviser to Tamahau Mahupuki, and at one time he held the position of Native Health Inspector.
