There wore distressing scenes at the pithead at Halmerend, as parents, wives, and children of tho imprisoned men anxiously awaited news. The rescue parties worked unceasingly, but numerous falls hampered tiioir operations. They brought up eleven men suffering from gas-poisoning, and ajso six -dead. Hopes of recovering tho 130 men who arc still entombed began, to disappear at midnight, but the rescuers .did not slacken their efforts. There Is no shortage of volunteers. RESCUE "WORK FRUITLESS. TWENTY-FIVE DEAD BODIES RECOVERED. Anetralinn onri N.Z. Cable Aasociatiou. (Received January 14, 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 13. Fruitless rescue work was continued nil day and all night at Halmerend. Twenty-five dead bodies have been recovered. The roads loading to tho workings where tho remainder of tho miners are entombed are all' blocked. Experts declare that it is unlikely any will be recovered alivo.
