The death occurred yesterday afternoon, at Lansdowne, Master ton, of another the pioneer baud of settlers who landed, in Wellington in the early days, in tha person of Mrs Henry Welch. In thodays of early settlement in. \Vcllinglon, the Hutt, and:later at Mastertou, many of the pioneers were greatly indebted tai the late Mrs ’ Welch tor her many nct» of kindness and self-sacrifice in making their lot lighter. Her willingness to holt* them, in their days of . trouble endeared her to the hearts ,of those sturdy settlers, telegraphs our correspondent, and the nows of her death will be received with feeling# of deep regret throughout the Wairarapa, The late Mrs' Welch was horn on August 20th, 183 G, at Calliugtou, Cornwall,- hugland, being a daughter of the lato-Mr and Mrs Thomas Poad: ' (With her -parents she came, to, New ■ Zealaiyi in the-, ship Duke of Eoxburgh, after which 1 Roxburgh street, Wellington, is named. I Jib, vessel left Plymouth in October, 1839, with, 167 immigrants on board, and arrive# .at Wellington on February ith, 1840, losing her master (Captain Thompson) overboard at Stephen Island' two days previously. The Duke of Eoxburgh was the sixth of the New Zealand Company s_ boats to reach New Zealand. The late Mi's Welch was the last hut one of the surviving passengers of that iinmigtank ship....
