MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. :
A meeting of the lower Hutt Boiougli, Council 'Was held last night. : were present: —The Mayor (Mr.H. Baldwin). and Councillors Hod gins, Hobbs, McDougaU, Bull, Brassel, Meldrum, Cleudon, and Carver. . , Notification was received from tho borough solicitor/ that steps bad been taken to obtain certain land at Bonnelly’a corner for' street- widening pur-; posts.—The report was considered most' satisfactory. . , ! In reference to the request for th* installation of si amp-vending machinesat the Post Office and railway station,] a letter was received from tho secretary: of the General Post Olhco stating that! it could not bo granted as stomps could bo obtained from vendors near Post Office between 8 -a.m. and 9 p.m. and from the bookstall at tho railway station between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.—further representations are to be made to the department on tho subject. . . A request from ratepayers- for tha northern side of William street to bo kerbed and channelled could not ba granted, the Mayor observing that the council had no funds to go on with the work.—lt was decided, however, that an estimate as to the cost of the work be prepared by the engineer. A report from the firo brigade stated that the istafl had collected i‘9. toward* the motor vehicle fund.
In his report, the engineer (Mr W, Eoche) stated that the re-metalling of the Main road. Pork avenue," and Heke street was completed, at a total cost of ,£632 5s 10d. Patching and general repair work had also been done on several other roads and they were now in good order. Kerhing and channelling footpaths was being carried out in various streets, as well as levelling and gravelling. Two connections had been made with the gas mains and one with the water mains, making the total number of connections to date 528 and 93i respectively.
