MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES,

Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., had to deal with a heavy charge list in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, by-law cases being a prominent feature. James McGarrity, for indecency, was sentenced to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. James Baldwin, jnr., pleaded “guilty” to furiously driving a four-wheeled cab in Cuba street. He was lined ss, with 'court costs 7s. Norman Copeland was charged with leaving a motor-car in Wingfield street insufficiently lighted. A penalty of ss, with court casts 7s, was imposed. Arthur J. Gilman, for riding a bicycle without a light after sunset, was fined ss, with court costs 7s. George Howard, who did not appear, was charged with leaving a motor-car unattended for a longer period than five minutes. He. was also charged with failing to draw the vehicle parallel to the pootpath. A fine of ss, with court costs 7s, was imposed on each charge. i Leonard M. Liardet, for driving a motor-car without having a registration mark attached, was convicted and fined ss, with court costs 7s. Harry Hudge, for riding a motorbicycle in Willis street without having a registration mark attached, was fined ss, with court costs 7s. . Wah Lee pleaded “guilty” to having worked at his trade or calling on Sunday, February 15th. Inspector Hendrey said that the accused was a fruiterer, and was carting fruit from one store to another, on the day in question, when he was discovered by a constable. A fine of ss, with court costs 7s, was imposed. Lawrenpe Driscoll, for failing to send his child to school regularly was fined the minimum penalty of ss, with coqrt costs 7s. Ernest Roberts was charged with failing to close his shop as required by the Shops and Offices Act, 1908. The inspector (Mr R. T. Bailey) said he visited defendant’s shop at 11.20 p.m. and found it open, when it should have been closed as from 11 o’clock. A fine of 6s was imposed.

George Waddle, for a breach of the motor-car by-laws, in that he remained on a stand when there were a greater number of care than allowed by the by-law, was fined Is, with court costs 7s.

James Brodie was charged with driving a motor-car without lights after dark. Defendant was convicted and fined ss, with court costs 7is. Cecil Rossiter, who did not appear, was fined Is, with court costs 7s, for riding a bicycle without having a bell attached.
