GOVERNAIENT HOUSE GARDEN PARTY.

It was unfortunate that the only fine day this week should not have been tho one selected by Their Excellencies the Governor and Countess of Liverpool for their garden party. Tho heavy rain yesterday morning evidently deterred many would-be guests trom venturing out, but it was fortunate that it cleared about the time tho guests were starting out, and remained fine for the rest of the afternoon. It was too bad, however, for any attempt to hold the function out of doors, and carriages drove to the main entrance, where arrangements bad been made for leaving coats and umbrellas. Their Excellencies received in. the hall, whence the visitors passed into tho drawing-room, and thence into tho ballroom, where tea was served from buffets running down each side of the room. A band played on the lawn during the arrival of tho guests, and afterwards was stationed on tho broad landing of the stairs. Beautiful ferns and palms from the conservaiories had been placed in tho draw-ing-room, where also vases of pale pink stocks and pink and red sweet peas were a feature of the decoration. .Tall vases of hydrangea stood on tho tables and in tho ballroom, and the dais was a mass of greenery and ferns. Lady Liverpool wore a beautiful gown of white satin and ninon draped with black Spanish lace, the neck was finished with a sailor collar of fine net, edged with Limerick lace, her hat was of whito pleated tulle, with a largo bow of the same, and a bunch of fruit, and she carried a posy of

pink malmaison carnations. Although tho day was so dull, there were many pretty frocks to bo seen among tho guests. Airs Day was in maize coloured muslin with touches of black and a black hat; Lady Stout wore a grey silk coat and skirt with wide lace collar, finished with Bulgarian embroidery, and a black hat with white feathers ; Lady Ward wore mole charmeuse draped with brocaded ninon, with yoke of whito lace veiled in chiffon, and her black hat was wreathed with cream coloured plumes; Airs Fisher wore black and a long black satin coat finished with fringe, and small hat; Aliss Fraser was in a grey costume with a wide cream hat; Mrs (Colonel) Collins wore whito voile embroidered in deep blue, and a black and white hat; Airs Hiley, grey charmeuse, with dark blue ninon, the bodies partially veiled with white net, and finished with pipings of red, her large navy blue hat was trimmed with blue and bronze ospreys; Airs H. D. Bell’s costume was of grey moire, with draped skirt, and a small hat of mole tulle, with flowers; Airs Christie, navy blue coat and skirt, and whito hat with tiny scarlet poppy buds; Miss Hall-Jones, a dark costume and red trimmed hat; Airs C. Jones, black lace over white silk, with purple hat; Aliss Jones, grey eolionno, and hat of black tulle; Airs Algar AVilliama, dark bluo costume, of plain and figured voile, and hat trimmed with flowers to match; Airs lan Duncan, black charmeuse with corsage of black ninon over white lace, and black hat; Mrs Beauchamp, purple cloth costume, and black hat with purple feathers; Mrs W. Nathan, black silk coat and skirt, and hat with violet plumes; Aliss E. Russell, black crepe de chine costume with frills of whito tulle, and black hat with pink rose; Airs Parry, black silk costume and rosetrimmed hat; Airs Coleridge, mauve silk, with touches of blue and white lace; Airs Garland, grey costume, with black satin coat; Airs Levvey, whito embroidered linen coat and skirt and a black hat; Aliss HarCourt, bluo costume and hat, with a coat of black l ibbed silk shot with gold; Airs Grey, white lace draped with black, and a floral hat; Airs F. Samuel, grey ninon, with steel trimming, and grey tagel hat with plumes; Airs Birnie, black laoe over white silk, and a rosetrimmed hat; Airs Rathboue, shot black and amethyst silk, and plumed hat; Airs Stott, shot grey eolienne, with touches of red; Airs J. Dykes, tielcolourcd costume and black hat; Alias Davison, black velvet, with large black and whito hat; Airs Pytt-Jackson, cream coat and skirt, and large picture hat with ostrich plumes; Aliss Davies, saxo blue costume and black plumed bat; Aliss O’Atcara, navy blue coat and skirt and black picture hat; Airs Shirtcliffe, mole silk costume and black hat; Aliss Al. Shirtcliffe, fawn coat and skirt and feathered hat; Miss Brandon, deep mauve silk costume and hat to match; Mrs Larnnch, fawn tailor-made and hat with coloured flowers; Airs Yaldwin, grey striped coat and skirt, faced with white, and a white plumed hat; Airs Bates, grey silk, with a white hat with pale-coloured chine ribbon ; Miss Alontgomery, blue frock trimmed with fur and a black hat; Airs McViily, gobelin blue silk, with short tunic of ■ black tulle, and a wide picture hat.
