TO-NIGHT’S ORGAN RECITAL
The attendances at the municipal organ recitals have improved very much during the. past few recitals, which can be taken as an indication that the public are beginning to realise that they have an artist of exceptional capabilities occupying the position of city organist. The “ Prelude and Fugue” (on the name of Bach) by Liszt, is one of many fugues written upon this name. The hearer is impressed by the quality of distinction and the wonderful employment of colouring throughout this great work by Liszt. The composer has treated the work freely and fancifully, with a depth of feeling and all the freshness and charm of nia wonderful imagination. Mr Page is again playing the “Air and Variations” upon a theme of Handel’s by Karg Ek-rt, also a “ Finale in B Flat” of Cesar Franck, a magnificent work, which so delighted a recent audience. An old English composition, " Concert in E Flat,” by William Felton, will be looked forward to. A beautiful “ Intermezzo” (Brahms) has been chosen to illustrate one of the characteristic moods of the composer. This is the first time the name of Brahms has appeared on the programmes of this series. A "Scherzo ” by Gigout will bo of great interest, as there aro very few scherzos written for the organ, owing to tho difficulty of interpreting so light and gay a movement upon this instrument. Works by Wolstonholmo and Guilmant make up a very attractive programme, which is well up to tho high standard of music played by Mr Page.
