WAIROA AFFAIRS
DEPORTED SALE OF MAURI LANDS. Press Association. WAIROA, July 10. U is reported on good authority that tue natives have practically agreed to soil the Awaroa-T'otara block to tho Government. The land has -an area of 17,000 acres, and is situated near W'aikari. The route of tho East Coast railway runs through it. There is a fairly strong inclination among the natives to sell their surplus lands, and the local authorities consider it tho best wav to settle the native question. and have tho lands occupied by Europeans paying rates for road am? .bridge construction. Owing to the scarcity of laud for small farms and the scarcity of suppliers, a proposal is afoot to closedown the dairy factory. It is considered this should not bo done without an effort to secure some land for farms. Local authorities consider that, though the Government cannot take the land compulsorily, it should invite Wairoa land-owners to make offers for suitable land.
As shmviug the splendid effects of the half-finished harbour, Wairoa has put up a record for a week’s shipping, last week nineteen boats arriving and departing all fully loaded.
