PIPE BAND CONCERT
The Wellington Pipe Band and Dancers’ Association gave a grand inaugural concert at the Opera House last evening, and -were enthusiastically 'received. Indeed so emphatic were the demand for encores that the original programme was considerably lengthened. There is surely something La the bagpipe air which arouses enthusiasm—the large audience was not wholly composed of Scots—for each
item by the pipers was greeted with outbursts of applause. The association is "the outcome of a small club formed in 1907 with Captain, now LieutenantColonel, Macintosh, aa its president. The tartan chosen—the “Macintosh”— in compliment to the first president, is now being worn and any enthusiastic Scotchman wishing to wear it also, is invited to become a' member. Amongst those preseu I were the Premier and Mrs Massey, who were received by Mr C. Crawford, the nresent president of the association. With them came the Misses Massey and Mrs Malcolm Ross, Mrs Crawford, Mr and Mrs C. 11. Morison and their daughters,-Mrs Menzics, Airs Herdraan. Mr Alex. Macintosh, Air Lindsay, r Gillies. A* interested iu the association were also present, and Mr J. B. Speed was helping in every way possible All the items of the programme were well received, and th unaccompanied contributions hy the Orpheus Quartette wore delightful, and much enjoyed were thesongs given by Aladam Groomo and Miss Adelaide Bruce. Mr Allwright sang a stirring ballad, and the audience simply could not have too much of Mr Harry 'Hall’s clever humour. Miss Betty Purdom gave enjoyable recitations, and the dancing of the reels by some of the members and their lady • friends was excellent. Needless to say the Pipe Band was listened to with great pleasure, and the members in the kilts formed a striking tableau wlien on the stage together. The association proposes to give another concerdt sehortly, and should ho quite sure of a record house after last evening’s performance.
