A SHAKESPEARE EVENING

An open evening in connection with the Wellington Shakespeare Club—the first of this season—was given at St. Andrew’s schoolroom last night. The room was filled with guests, who greatly enjoyed the programme arranged. A dainty supper was afterwards provided for the guests. The programme was as follows:—Piano solo, Miss Corliss; scene from “ As You Like It,” by Miss Mclntosh (Duke), Miss Low (Rosalind), and Miss Wallace (Celia); recitation from Merchant of Venice,” by Miss Luke; song, ‘‘Pull Fathom Five,” Mr Bowman; scene from “The Tempest,' by Miss McEldowney (Ferdinand), Miss Petrie (Miranda); recitation, “ Hamlet’s Soliloquy,” Mr W. R. Bock; piano solo by Miss Ethelwynno Kirk; dialogue from “ Anthony and Cleopatra,” by Miss Van Staveren (Cleopatra) and Mr Godfrey; song, .“Orpheus with his Lute,” by Miss B. Van Staveren; scene, “Much Ado About Nothing,” in which Misses Gold, HallBurgess, and Reading took part. Mr H. E. Nicholls gave a reading; Mr Buckeridgo contributed “ Come Away, come Away, Death,” from “Twelfth Night.” A scene from “Midsummer Night’s Dream” was given by Misses Maudsley, Reading and Swinburne, and the programme closed with the epilogue to “As You Like It,” given by Miss S. Putnam. The stage had an effective background of green hangings, and was arrayed with palms and flowers.
