AT THE RACES

The winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was begun yesterday, and although dull the weather was calm and pleasant the greater part of the day. There was an unusually large number of strangers, the ball, of course, being an additional attraction. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Liverpool arrived at noon. With them came Mr and Miss Vavasour, of Blenheim, and Mr, Mrs, and Miss Grigg, of Christchurch. Her Excellency wore a graceful gown of cedar brown cloth with sable furs and a large brown hat with white velvet crown and plume. Mrs Grigg was wearing a tailor-made gown of blue cloth, and small black hat. Miss Vavasour wore pale blue cloth, with white furs and large hat. , : Miss Harcourt wore a violet cloth dress with ermine stole, and her violet hat was trimmed with a long feather the same shade. Miss Fitz Gerald, black hat with orange ribbon, and dark blue gown; Miss McLean, brown dress, fur coat, and hat with blue ostrich feathers; Miss Massey wore grey, and her sister a blue cloth gown; Miss Martin Kenney, long coat and small black hat with feathers; Miss Hall-Jones woro a violet hat with tall osprey and a tailormade gown; Miss Keniber, blue trimmed with red and a blue hat; Misses Watson wore navy blue, with pretty burnt straw hats swathed with ribbon; Miss Myers was in grey.
