NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By "The Judge,") Miss ‘Winsome, -who won the Avondale Guineas on Saturday in very convincing fashion, is a much smarter filly than many of her southern critics gave her credit for. Last season she started live times, winning four races and being just beaten by Miscount in the fifth, the Northern Champagne Stakes. Now she has opened her winning account this season at the first time of asking. • Miss Winsome is a very shapely brown filly by Sou It from Winsome, by Cuirassier —Winnie, by Kingfisher, and was bred by her owner, Mr Donald McLeod, a well known Auckland sharebroker, who also owns a run on Waiheko Island. Winsome, the dam of the Guineas winner, was not much of a success on the turf, but she was a lino big mare, and has done well at th© stud for she has also given to the turf Tamainupo and Kakama, both very speedy gallopers.
The Auckland rider, Ben Dooley, was in great form on the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting. Out of six mounts he rode three winners, two seconds, and a third, performing "the hat trick." Deeley is a good judge of pace, has nice hands, and can ride a most determined finish.
Monolinc, the first of the two-year-old fillies to score this season, is a chestnut filly by Multiform, brother to Monoform, from Dclania (Seaton Delavnl—Campania). When in the mood Delania knew how to gallop, winning several important races, and she has evidently transmitted some of her galloping ability to her daughter. As the Avondale Stakes wa a won by Monorail (by Monoform—Daffodil) tho credit of siring the first two winning two-year-olds this season goes to the credit of Monoform- lie was a very handsome horse, and, although a failure on the turf, bids fair to retrieve his laurels at the stud, for with very moderate opportunities ho has led off well. It seems quite likely that wc may yet regret the fact that he wus sold to go to Australia. There is no gainsaying the fact that Jack Dolaval is one of tho smartest ponies seen out for many a long day. Last season he started seven times and won on five occasions, while last week, at Avondale, ho won very easily at the first time of asking, although there were some speedy sprinters, such as Electra-koff, Turbine, and Salute, among the field. The Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting will take place on Thursday and Friday.
That good horse Wairiki, who, under many disadvantages, proved himself ono of New Zealand’s best and gamest racehorses, has not so far had many ’opportunities of proving his worth as a stallion, but some of his progeny can gallop, and ono of them is Master Wairiki, who won the Vlumpton Handicap at Avondale on Saturday. Ho can certainly run a very solid mile, for last season ho won the Auckland Welter at EUcrslie in Imin 41sec, a time which means fast galloping. Master Wairiki's dam, Little Mabel (Medallion— Kilmory}, is a half sister to Kilmarnock.' Kilderkin, and Moreykoff.
