Lord and Lady Islington have returned to Wellington and are in residence at Government House. Their Excellencies attended animal meeting of the Young Women's Christian Association in the Town Hall last evening. At 3 p.m. to-day Lord Islington will open the infectious diseases hospital. The resignations of Nurses 0. Long and P. Cope have been accepted by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. ' .

The Bishop of Melanesia, Hr Wilson, Mrs Wilson and four children, arrived at Auckland by the Southern Cross from Norfolk Island on Sunday. Mr S. S. Millington, son of Air S. G. Air S. N. Ziman, one of the New Zealand Rhodes Scholars, who passed seven-ty-first , in the Indian Civil Service Examination this year, has bepn assigned to the Bombay division of the I.C.*S. Mr Ziman was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, the Now Zealand University, and Balliol College, Oxford.

Mr W. P. Fitzgerald (of Roseneath), who has been, touring Great Britain for eight months for health reasons, returnsto Wellington by the Manama to-day. Accompanying him on. his Home travels were his cousins, Dr Chute and Major Chute. A welcome is to be tendered to Mr Fitzgerald to-night by his many Rosenoath friends.

Colonel Heard (Director of Military Training and Education) and Captain J. T. Burnett Stuart (Director of Military Operations and Intelligence) left Loudon on October 11th by the Otway, bound for New Zealand, to take up their appointments in the defence force of the Dominion. Mr C. Wray Paliiser, representing the High Commissioner, saw them off at St. Pancras. Captain D. C. Spencer-Smith, staff officer to the new Commandant of the New Zealand forces (Colonel Godley) joined the Otway at Marseilles.

Dr Fell ha® resigned the position of honorary physician to the Ohiro, Homo on account of removing his residence to across the harbour. The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wore informed of this at yesterday’s meeting, and general regret was expressed. The Eev. W. A. Evans said Dr. Pell had rendered valuable service to tho Ohiro Home for many years. He had always been ready , and willing with his advice, i and on many occasions had saved - the board considerable trouble. He moved that the board place on record appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the doctor. This was seconded by Mr J. Smith and carried unanimously. Harry Pearce, the champion sculler of Australia, arrives m Wellington to-day from Sydney, to prepare for his match with. Webb on the Wanganui river on Boxing Day. Fogweli, who was pacemaker for Dick Arnst in all his races in New Zealand, accompanies Pearce as his pacemaker. Pearce is now reiving, at about 12st 131 b, but expects to row in New Zealand at about 12st TOib. : He thinks that his improved form will, take him to victory. Fogwell intends. to try to induce Whelch, the Afcaroa sculler, to give him another race over' the same course on which tho Akaroa man beat him easily. Pearce has a great opinion of Fogwell, and does not hesitate to say he should beat Whelch as easily as. ho was beaten before. His friends give him a good chance if another race can he arranged. There is a probability that Arnst may meet the winner of .the WobbPearee race.
