FEARFUL CONDITIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright, MELBOURNE, April G. A letter from the British ConsulGeneral at San Francisco says that from a workman’s point of view the situation there is deplorable. The unions have seized San Francisco in a relentless grip, and are refusing to allow any new members to join g tho unions, their object being to limit the' supply of labour and to force up wages. Tho expenses of living are so high that a man earning a guinea a day, if married, can only manage to keep his head above water.
