Fiidliiy in connection with the Papakaio murder case, They will give no information on the subject. The man is. known to have been about the neighbourhood for some time before and after the murder of Bennie. He. told some people that he was a baker, • “ and others that'he was a cook, and ran away from the steamer Fort Stephens when she was in port. As a matter of fact the man came from the South and made application to the Canterbury Land Board,for a sooMoin of land. The police records show that he has served'sentences for housebreaking, etc., but the fact that ho has only been detained and not ar- . rested may moan that the police have nothing mnch to go on. SEARCH AT SYDNEY. (Received October 10, 10.37 p.m.) SYDNBX. October 10. At the instance of the New Zealand police, detectives searched the Hoeraki cm her arrival from Wellington to-day, looking for some person whose description had been forwarded in connection with the murder of Mr Rennie, schoolmaster at Papakaio, on the 2nd inst. The detectives found no trace of anybody’answering the description.
