Tim Premier, replying to a telegram from a member of the Chamber of Com. merce. says it is the intention of tbe Government to have competitive provincial displays at tho New Zealand Exhibition. Jlo hopes each provincial district will exert itself to do justice to the scheme. A similar procedure was followed at tin; St. Louis Exhibition, and proved one of tho most attractive features there, CHRISTCHURCH. October 30. The Board of Governors decided several months ago. in response to representations,to try the experiment of keeping open the reference and magazine’departments of the public library on Sunday afternoons, and till 10 o’clock instead of 0 o’clock on week nights. To-day the Board decided to revert to the old system, keeping open only the public read-ing-room during the extended hours and on Sundays as the attendances in the other departments were npt considered to have justified the experiment.
Mr 11. W. Bishop. S.M., gave his reserved judgment to-day in the case Hughes v. Johnson, wherein plaintiff, a married woman, claimed .£2OO damages for injuries received in consequence ot a defective bridge which crossed a umall stream in defendant’s public pleasure gardens at Opawa. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £IOO. At Kaiapoi Magistrate’s Court to-day, J. G. Syvret, a prohibited person, admitted having received a flask of whisky, procured for him hy a friend, and was fined £5. Accused had previously been convicted throe times this year for a similar offence. A young man named Peter Bryson, a resident of Wright’s road. Hillmorton, near Sunnyside Mental Hospital, was accidentally shot in the body by a pearifle on Saturday. Ho was iu the act of washing a dog in his garden when a bullet from a pea-rifio, fired by some boys in a neighbouring garden, struck him and penetrated the right lung. He was taken to a hospital immediately. DUNEDIN. October 30. Tho tourist Department has made arrangements for the erection of a commodious diningroom at Beech Hut, on the overland route to the Sutherland Falls and Milford Sound. A party of workmen is on the way to erect the room. John Blackwood, aged fit years, was found dead in a house in Union street early this morning. Death was apparently due to haemorrhage of the lungs. Henry Johnston, a fireman on the steamer Invercargill, dropped dead in Princess street this evening. He had been suffering from heart disease. The fund for the erection of a medical ward at Dunedin Hospital is making good progress. Up to the present £361!) has been raised out of £ISOO required.
