BILLIARDS.

Messrs E. Donnelly and George Grimstone—tho former representing the Cycling Club and the latter the Civil Service Club—met in a contest at billiards in the Hardware Club's rooms last evening. The ©vent was regarded with great interest. The terms of th© game were “all in/' and the competition carried with it the Crystalate Cup and the amateur championship of Wellington. For the first hour's play there was little to choose between the competitors. Mr Donnelly was in splendid form, and Mr Grimstone. more nervously but with good judgment, availed himself of such opportunities as were left open to him. At half time the scores stood Mr Donnelly 251, and Mr Grimstone 237. Latpr on, by eteadv, careful play, Mr Donnelly secured a commanding lead, and, with a pretty break of fifty-four, rendered the result inevitable, although Mr Grimstone had placed to his credit at one visit to the table the very respectable total of forty-seven points. Thence out the game was onesided. Mr Donnelly, although he was considerably favoured by fortune, played cautiously and with a keen outlook as to future possibilities. On the other hand, Mr Grimstone, though at times making very brilliant canons, never seemed tp be able to keep the balls in position; and. when splendid opportunities were left him, he broke down at the simplest of strokes. At the close Mr Donnelly % had scored 501 and Mr Grimstone 308. The game was an interesting on© while the players were within what may be called measurable distance of each other, but later it was quit© tame. At th© conclusion the competitors were heartily applauded, and Mr Donnelly was presented by Mr J. Owen with the Crvstalato Cup, which—until it is wrested from it at some future com-portion-will be held by the Cycling Club. A trophy of the value of M2 2e was also presented to Mr Donnelly and Messrs Alcock and Co. gave a fine cue and case to Mr Grimstone. The Hon Mr Carroll had intended to present the prizes, but sent an apology for absence being detained in the House of sentatives.
