MELROSE IMPROVEMENT.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE. TEN THOUSAND POUNDS EXPENDED. Tlio Melrose Improvement Committee made tie following recommendations to the City Council last evening:— 1, That street name plates bo provided for the- formed streets of Vogelroirn. 2. That the widening out of Tollman street to the full width be named out as suggested by the City Engineer, at an estimated cost of £BO, Provided that tho property-owners on iho high side do not object. ' 3. That tho City Engineer be instructed to place “on tho estimates for next year a sum to cover tho cost of giving access for tho erection of buildings at Pearce .street, Vogeitown, and to connect with Evelyn terrace. ’ 4. That the sum of £l5B 11s 6d temporarily paid out of Melrose improvement loan for the widening of Seagar’s cutting, Brooklyn,, be charged to tramway loan account. > 6. That tho culvert at tho Parade, Island Bay, be straightened and duplicated, provided the property-owuens benefited by the work contribute a sum of £3OO towards the cost, a further £4OO to be charged to tramway loan account. / The committee reported that the cost of the Melrose improvement works carried out to date was £10,611, divided in the various districts as follows: tCilhimie £2441, Island Bay £3602, Ohiro £4568: total. £10,511. The Engineer reported that in many oases the ■ amounts stated in the schedule for tho Melrose works are Inadequate to properly carry out tho work specified. The report was agreed to, Councillors Moltaren and Evans asking to have their objection recorded to charging £4OO for the Island Bay culvert to the tramways loan account.
